More than half doesn't get taxes, and certainly doesn't all go to people who don't pay for taxes. Who do you think pays for the military? Or the roads? I guess universal health care is only a joke in this country b/c every other advanced industrial western democracy seems to be doing just fine with it.

Universal healthcare is a load of shit. Why would I wanna pay for someone elses treament? Look at Europe. It sucks there and the US has the best medical treatment in the world...or will have had the best until Obama puts it into effect.
If you want to wait 6 months to a year to get a life saving surgery that should be taken care of immediately then sure promote your universal death care...
Canada and Europe quite often deny people life saving procedures, or medications. Why should a governing body tell you whether you can live or die?
What we really need is tort reform... It would decrease medical costs so anyone can afford it.

11:06 how won't tort reform do anything? it will lower the cost of medical expenses by reducing the number of frivolous lawsuits, in which the Doctors usually settle outside of court, which causes their malpractice insurance to go up, which causes medical costs to go up.
what i meant was that tort reform would have a very small effect, and wouldn't do nearly enough to deal with the problems in rising health care costs and access. It might be a good idea, and a start, but it isn't nearly enough.
Because the Canadian way is a clusterfuck. No one wants to be a doctor. It's not worth the long hours and ridiculously hard work for such low pay. Half the time, Medicare/Medicaid patients in the States end up paying absolutely nothing, and the doctors receive nothing. It's not worth it. I support the idea of human responsibility. But ah, well. Let's throw another stimulus package on the table and watch it...do nothing.

Canada works quite well with the universal healthcare system. It would be absolutely fucking ridiculous to imply healthcare requirements, this would be impossible to follow.
I'm a conservative, and I don't believe I'm selfish. I'm a family man. I'm also a physician, and I can tell you first-hand that universal healthcare is neither practical nor entirely feasible in the United States. Not for doctors and those who have their tax money funneled into the system, anyway.
Universal healthcare should be mandatory for minors because they don't choose their parents or living situation. "Adults" should be responsible enough to provide for themselves...
11:01.. Universal healthcare works on a traiage system, so the majority of the time you get in sooner. Besides, I'd rather have to wait for a procedure to be done then have the ability to get it done right away but never be able to afford it.
exactly why we don't need Universal Healthcare... Why should 3% of the population work their asses of their entire life to pay for stupid people who don't care for themselves. You can get health insurance working for a grocery store. Trust me I know after college I worked there for 6 months before I got my current job, and I was offered health insurance just before I left. So anyone can afford it if you want to work.

Just because you are "offered" health insurance doesn't mean you can afford it or that it will cover what you need it to when you get sick and then you are left with thousands in medical bills you can't afford and forced into bankruptcy to save your own life. If Canada and Europe can do it, why can't we?
